Post-Tampa Greetings and Update

Chair: Nathan McClintock

Greetings GFASG members,

We had a great conference in Tampa. Some GFASG-sponsored highlights included: a panel of activists from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), a field trip to Immokalee, and an Author Meets Critics panel with UC Berkeley anthropologist Seth Holmes. We were also pleased to co-sponsor a panel featuring Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah Geechee Nation. These great events, on top of a handful of additional paper and sessions, surely represent the quality of events that we can look forward to in Chicago next year.

In addition to these events, we also elected a new board. But before introducing you to the new members, I want to take this opportunity to give thanks to several outgoing board members for all their hard work over the last 2-3 years: Danny Block (chair), Hilda Kurtz (at large), Heather Hyden (at large), Easther Chigumira (student/at large), Jenny Goldstein (student/at large), Nurcan Atalan-Helicke (secretary/treasurer), Colleen Hammelman (website), and Gina Thornburg (newsletter). Fortunately for us, some of them will remain on the board, albeit in new positions.

The new board members are:

Chair: Nathan McClintock (Portland State)
Vice-Chair: Laura-Anne Minkoff-Zern (Syracuse)
Secretary/Treasurer: Katia Aviles-Vazquez (UT Austin)
At-Large: Danny Block (Chicago State)
At-Large: Jennifer Blecha (San Francisco State)
At-Large (student rep): Levi Van Sant (Georgia)
At-Large (student rep): Colleen Hammelman (Temple)
Website: Xiang Chen (Ohio State)
Newsletter: Gina Thornburg (Kansas State)

If you’re interested in getting involved, please let us know! We are in the process of organizing several working groups, including Outreach, Bylaws, Field Trips, Student Activities, so stay tuned for more info. We will also be posting the official business meeting minutes in the next week or so.

That’s all for now. Looking forward to seeing you all in Chicago!
